The city got its present name in 1822 after Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and later the seventh U.S. president.
Since 1968, the city shared management with the county, making it the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States, and the eleventh largest in the world. The city has a total area of 2,264.5 km ². Of this, 1,962.4 km ² land and 302.1 km ² is water (13.34%). |
