New Caledonia is a French territory in the Pacific Ocean, the capital is Nouméa. New Caledonia has a special status of sui generis collective of France, ie France's non-European areas. It consists of the main island of Grande Terre, Loyalty Islands, and several smaller islands. It has a land area totaling 18 575.5 km. The currency is the CFP franc.
Since 1986, the UN Committee on Decolonization included New Caledonia on the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. It will be decided by referendum sometime between 2014 and 2019 on New Caledonia to remain within the French Republic as an autonomous overseas sui generis group, or whether it should become an independent state. |
