Hobart is the capital and largest city of the Australian island State of Tasmania. Hobart was founded in 1804 as a penal colony, is Australia's second oldest city after Sydney and New South Wales. The city lies to the South-East at the mouth of the River Derwent. The port that is formed which is the second deepest natural harbour in the world. On the horizon of the city is dominated by the 1,271-metre-high Mount Wellington.

Hobart is an Antarctic departure city, with its geographic proximity to East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Out in the harbour here it goes both research vessels and cruise ships, and the Hobart International Airport has flights with Antarctica Airlink to the Wilkins runway at Casey Station.

Hobart has an access to a variety of beaches, Sandy Bay, Cornelian Bay, Nutgrove, Kingston, Bellerive, Seven Mile, Cremorne, Clifton and Goats Beaches.

Hobart is home to the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, which is housed in the Federation Concert Hall in the city's waterfront, and Australia's oldest theatre, the Theatre Royal, located in the city. Hobart also has a thriving classical, jazz, folk, punk, hip-hop, electro, metal and rock music culture. Hobart is the host of many major festivals such as "Festival of voices", the Hobart Fringe Festival, Hobart Summer Festival, the Southern roots Festival, the Falls Festival in Marion Bay and the Soundscape Festival. Of the museums and art galleries, a mention of the Tasmanian Museum and art gallery and the Museum of old and new art, or MONA as it is being called, a several-story Gallery.

The city's nightlife is mainly to Salamanca place, near the sea, by Elizabeth St in North Hobart and Sandy Bay. Here are the most popular restaurants that offer everything from Chinese to Thai, Greek, Pakistani, Italian, Indian and Mexican menu. But popular pubs, bars and nightclubs are to be found across the city. Major national and international music events are usually held in the Derwent Centre and at the Casino. The Shopping Street is Elizabeth Street, with the shopping centre and the pedestrian area of Elizabeth and the General Post Office.
