Launceston is a city located north of the island of Tasmania in Australia. The city is the second largest city and the fastest growing city in Tasmania. Launceston's next door neighbor-by is Devonport, about 99 miles to the Northwest. Launceston is located where the rivers South Esk and the North Esk meet. The port is used for shipping and pleasure craft. The South Esk River is the longest river in Tasmania. Launceston was founded in 1806 and is named for Launceston in Cornwall in the United Kingdom.

Launceston serves as a commercial hub in Tasmania and is a major tourist centre. Cataract Gorge is Launcestons's biggest tourist attraction. It is the world's longest chair lift and is located close to the city centre. Launceston has many, including City Park which is located on the outskirts of the city centre. The city is home to the Albert Hall. The Park has a large enclosure for Japanese Macaque monkeys, a gift from sister city Ikeda, Japan. Launceston General Post Office dating back to 1880, the city has also Tasmania Zoo.
